Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks in UK Waters
Client: Joint Nature Conservation Committee
The UK is one of Europes largest shark fishing nations, with effective control over inshore waters and the ability to take some measures for the conservation and management of stocks out to the 200-mile limit. NatureBureau was commissioned to draft the UK Shark Plan in collaboration with JNCC staff.
The draft Plan
describes shark and ray fisheries and trade and past and present trends for effort and yield
lists current management measures, including monitoring, control and surveillance, and assesses their effectiveness
develops major objectives for a UK Shark Plan and the strategies for achieving these
makes recommendations for precautionary conservation and management action and prioritises them.
The UK Shark Plan will be a useful contribution towards shark conservation and management and may also help to guide the development of the European Shark Plan.
