The Butterflies of Wiltshire draws on historical records from the last 150 years and on records from the Wiltshire Butterfly Mapping Scheme to present the butterfly atlas for the county. The book provides an authoritative account of the changing fortunes of the 48 butterfly species found in the county. As Dr Martin Warren says in his foreword, this type of recording provides a vital platform on which we can build an effective conservation strategy.
Each species is illustrated with at least one colour photograph, most of them taken by recorders. Additional photographs show some of the countys typical butterfly habitats. Distribution maps show the status of each species in the county. Diagrams show typical flight periods and results of transect counts for most species.
Beatrice Gillam has edited the book and contributed a chapter on Wiltshires butterfly habitats. Other introductory chapters include an account of the history of butterfly recording and the status of butterflies in Wiltshire.
